Downton Abbey Escorted Tour 2017 - Tour description

Downton Abbey Escorted Tour 2017

We followed the adventures and misadventures of the Crawley clan over six seasons. We smiled when Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellows related his experience in New York when a fan followed him at a book store and pleaded, “Please, let Lady Edith be happy!” We held back tears when Lady Mary’s husband, Matthew, died in a tragic car accident right after the birth of their son. We rejoiced at the final festive holiday scene in the decorated Grand Saloon when we celebrated Lady Edith’s engagement to Bertie Pelham, the newly elevated marquess of Hexham. Finally! Lady Edith was happy! Join us for the holidays and immerse yourself in the romance and opulence of a bygone era. We’ll enjoy champagne and canapés in the Grand Saloon, decorated as it was in the final scene of the beloved series. Our hosts – the 8th Earl and Countess Carnarvon owners of Highclere Castle - Downton Abbey December 2017!

A series of events, tours, talks and exhibitions will be held throughout the year. Full details of events at the Cathedral and across the county are available on a dedicated website www.janeausten200.co.uk.

The Festival of Lights at Longleat is a truly unique spectacle. Hundreds of illuminated designs (some measuring up to 20 metres in height, and 70 metres in length) help to transform the world-famous Wiltshire estate into a glowing winter wonderland on a spectacular scale.

Day 5: Entrance to Downton Place (Greys Court)

(B)

After breakfast at our hotel, we meet in the lobby for our visit to two Downton locations we’ll all remember from the series.

10:30AM Downton Abbey fans will remember Greys Court, the Tudor country house and gardens near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, as Eryholme, the property Robert, the Earl of Grantham, was considering as a new home for the Crawley family when he was about to lose Downton to debt and taxes. The house was used as a hunting lodge by the Dowager Countess’ late husband.

Downton VillageDownton Village at Bampton
2:30PM Entrance to Basildon Park (Grantham House) featured in the season five finale of the popular period drama, ITV's Downton Abbey, in November 2014. The house also featured in the special London Season episode of Downton Abbey on Christmas Day 2013, which was watched by over 10 million people.

The interiors of Basildon Park are used as the Crawley family’s London residence, Grantham House. In the season five finale our elegant Georgian mansion was at the heart of Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge’s wedding. Basildon Park played host to all of the much loved regular characters from the show.

During the London Season episode in 2013, the house was at the centre of the unfolding story as the family prepared for Rose’s coming out ball in the capital. Shirley MacLaine reprised her role as Martha Levinson and Paul Giamatti joined the cast as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold.

Day 6: Downton Village (Bampton)

(B, Afternoon Tea)

After breakfast at our hotel, we meet in the hotel lobby for out departure to Bampton, Downton Village in the TV series.

10:30AM Guided tour of Downton Village (Bampton) This charming village will be familiar to Downton Abbey fans, doubling as the fictional Yorkshire village of Downton, supposedly somewhere between Ripon and Thirsk! Many scenes, including some of Downton Abbey’s key events, have been filmed in and around the church in Bampton, the main film location. A variety of buildings have been used as pubs, shops and the post office.

Bampton ChurchDownton Wedding Scene

1PM After our visit to Bampton, we’ll enjoy afternoon tea in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds.

Bampton Village

The glorious, honey-coloured towns and villages of the Cotswolds look as if they have strayed into the 21st century from another era. The sheep-shaped past here is appealingly evident in striking churches and manor houses built by wealthy textile merchants. Flourishes of a later heritage include a fine legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement.

2:30PM Oxford Walking Tour

The great Irish poet WB Yeats once said "I wonder anybody does anything at Oxford but dream and remember, the place is so beautiful". On this guided walking tour of one of the world’s great university towns, we’ll discover why. We’ll visit Oxford's most iconic and interesting landmarks, all within the easy walking route, and hear about Oxford's famous people, past and present, and their triumphs and tragedies.

Day 7: Return to London

(B, Farewell Dinner)

After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll have time for some last-minute shopping, exploring Winchester or perhaps visiting the authentic Bavarian style Christmas market in the Cathedral close. A bit of pampering at the hotel’s luxury spa or a workout at the health club are also delightful possibilities before we board our motor coach for the drive to London.

2PM We return to our London hotel, the Arbor London Hyde Park, and check in for our final night in London. We can rest before our farewell dinner, do some shopping on Oxford Street or take a stroll in Hyde Park. Our hotel is the perfect base for exploring the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum, Portobello Market, Kensington Palace or the Royal Albert Museum.

7PM We will enjoy a festive farewell dinner at our hotel.

Day 8: Airport transfer

(B)

Sadly, our Downton Abbey adventure comes to a close after breakfast. We’ll meet in the hotel lobby before boarding our motor coach for the airport transfer.
